Traditional Finnish sauna

A Finnish sauna is a traditional dry heat sauna originating in Finland. Finnish saunas are usually clad in wood and vary in size. The heat is generated by stones that are traditionally heated by a wood-burning stove. Occasionally, water is poured onto the hot stones to create steam. The high temperatures in a Finnish sauna usually range from 80 to 100 degrees Celsius with a relative humidity of about 10%. Finnish saunas are traditionally used for relaxation, cleansing and improving blood circulation, and are often enjoyed after a day of physical exertion. Today, Finnish saunas can be found all over the world and are enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.

Wood-fired or electric heater

A traditional Finnish sauna is wood-fired, but Finnish saunas with electric heaters are becoming increasingly popular. One of the advantages of an electric heater is that the temperature is easier to control. In addition, the newer generations of electric heaters are also available for standard sockets and are relatively energy efficient.

Wood-fired Finnish sauna

For an authentic sauna experience, opt for a wood-fired Finnish sauna. Keep in mind that it can take some time for the sauna to reach the desired temperature, so it is advisable to plan a sauna session consisting of several rounds, with a cold shower in between each round. In addition, it can be difficult to set a higher temperature in a wood-fired sauna.

Electric Finnish sauna

Combi sauna

If you want the best of both worlds, choose a hybrid sauna. Traditional saunas and infrared saunas both have their specific health benefits. For example, an infrared sauna is often used after exercise (muscle recovery) or to relieve muscle and joint pain (rheumatic complaints). Traditional saunas are mainly used to raise body temperature and relax after a stressful day. With a combination sauna, you can combine all these benefits in one device. An additional advantage is that if you use the infrared sauna first, the heating time of the traditional sauna will be significantly reduced. Wood types

Canadian Red Cedar

White Cedar, Hemlock

A good alternative to Canadian Red Cedar is White Cedar, also known as Hemlock. This type of wood does not have the mould and bacteria-killing properties, but it is otherwise an excellent type of wood for infrared cabins and is considerably cheaper.
